Glass and steel extension for a townhouse
- Surface: 40m²
- Objectives: Offer modular spaces and enhance natural light
- Materials: Steel, wood, lime plaster
An Extension that Connects the Spaces
The architect conducted a study covering both the existing facades and the new extension. This project made it possible to completely open up this formerly compartmentalized space and bring in a great deal of natural light.
This steel extension connects the spaces of the house: the master bedroom, the landing-office, and the patio. These volumes are now connected to each other and offer both great perspectives and great privacy.
Modular Spaces
The architect proposed layouts allowing great modularity to open and close living spaces according to the owners' needs and the time of day. These include full-height sliding doors, glazed doors, and blinds.
The bespoke steel extension was built in agreement with the local planning department. The goal was to achieve the greatest possible height to capture maximum natural light and create a spacious and comfortable living volume.
The functions of the different spaces are interchangeable: the bedroom becomes a winter garden, the winter garden becomes a living room, the landing becomes an office, the office becomes a play area for children.
The volumes flow through one another and the upper floor now forms a single coherent space.
A Warm and Functional Interior
A bespoke layout in oiled wood (Rubio) creates a unique design. In the extension of the office, there is a library whose lower cupboard doors are louvered shutters.
The wardrobe fitted in the bedroom is recessed into wall lining, visually reducing its depth. Matching the wall color, it blends in perfectly, the whole offering a vivid yet soft color scheme.
The connection between interior and exterior is made through a large bay window, which showcases the garden's greenery.
A lime plaster finish in a linen color warms the space, while the through-shelf in oak supports the decor composed around the bed.
The bedroom is separated from the patio by large glazed doors and sliding doors. On the landing, a large sliding door concealed in the adjoining partition makes it possible to isolate the room or open it up widely.
