Upcycling renovation of a family apartment

Renovating for the next 20 years
In this renovation project, the last work had been done more than 20 years ago. The owners felt the need to refresh their interior to continue feeling comfortable, ideally for the next 20 years. Over time, they had accumulated many family pieces of furniture, often antique, whose dimensions were sometimes disproportionate to the apartment's volumes. Their main objective was therefore to optimize the use of space.
Restoring spacious living areas
The goal of the interior architect was to create fluid and functional circulation. To achieve this, it was necessary to reduce clutter from the furniture to move towards a clean and minimalist style. At the same time, tastes and trends having evolved over the last two decades, the owners also wished to modernize the decoration and layout.
Modernizing the existing layout
The owners wanted to bring more warmth and conviviality to the living areas and optimize the layout to easily accommodate family and friends. All furniture elements that did not fit into the project were sold or donated. Conversely, everything that could be preserved was kept, either as-is or after transformation. Following a both ethical and economical approach, the team favored the reuse of existing elements, the purchase of second-hand furniture, and a careful selection of new materials.
Meeting everyday needs
Beyond updating the networks to standards, we focused on essential needs. For example, the hallway, which had served only as a passage, was redesigned to enlarge one of the two bathrooms, thus optimizing its space. The water rooms were entirely renovated, and part of the kitchen was also thoroughly refurbished.
For the other rooms, significant work in interior layout as well as the renovation of floor and wall coverings was enough to revive the spaces, while clearly defining the function of each area according to the owners' expectations.
The real challenge of this project was to create harmony between the existing, often old elements, and the new elements of the project, while respecting the soul and character of the place.
